Our Story

In 2025, EPIC proudly celebrates 40 years of advocating for adults with disabilities. Reflecting on our modest origins, we started when a group of parents, whose children were transitioning out of the public school system, united to create daytime activities for them. Our organization, originally incorporated in 1985 as Southern Maryland Vocational Industries, Inc., was funded with just $10 and the proceeds from a “yard sale.”  Yes, that’s right, a “yard sale.” Incredible! Who would have thought that a group of tenacious parents that just wanted something for their kids to do would have created a multimillion-dollar company that exited for 40 years and still going.

OUR SUCCESS

Over the decades, EPIC has grown exponentially, thanks to the unwavering support of our community, dedicated volunteers, and passionate staff. We’ve expanded our programs to include a wide array of services that empower individuals with disabilities, helping them to lead fulfilling lives and achieve their personal goals.
From vocational training and job placement to social and recreational activities, our initiatives are designed to foster independence, build confidence, and promote inclusion. As we look to the future, we remain committed to breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for all individuals, regardless of their abilities.

OUR FUTURE

Our anniversary is not just a celebration of our past achievements but a reaffirmation of our mission. We are immensely grateful to everyone who has been a part of this journey, and we invite you to join us as we continue to make a difference in the lives of so many. Here’s to another 40 years of advocacy, innovation, and transformation!
With unprecedented times of grant-based companies like EPIC constantly fighting for the next dollar, EPIC continues with innovative thought and implementing these practices. A huge part of our future is spreading our care and services across the state doing in home care where we are not just helping people with developmental disabilities live as independently as possible, but all people.
